SOLARIS
SOLARIS is a fiber weave pattern designed to deliver multi-axis tensile strength on standard textile equipment. Material-agnostic by design, works with cellulose, synthetics, and high-performance yarns alike. Fully open under CERN-OHL-W 2.0. Anyone with a loom and yarn can weave it. Anyone can modify it. Anyone can build with it.
What it is
A zone-alternating bi-axial weave. Twill regions are interlocked with pearl-weave nodes, creating a virtual third axis of reinforcement on a standard 2-axis loom, without the cost or complexity of tri-axial weaving machinery.
Repeat unit: 12 warp × 12 weft
Why it works
- Twill diagonal = virtual third axis. Twill creates a load path at ~45°, simulating what a third thread set does in tri-axial weave.
- Pearl nodes = crack arrestors. Tears that propagate along the twill diagonal hit a pearl region and stop.
- Zone transitions = energy absorption. Force crossing from twill to pearl changes direction. Every transition absorbs energy. More transitions, more toughness.
Specification
- Fiber
- Any natural or synthetic yarn with adequate tensile strength. Cellulose-rich naturals (cotton, flax, jute, ramie, bamboo) work well. Synthetics (carbon, aramid, glass, UHMWPE) work for high-performance applications.
- Yarn weight
- Medium (Ne 10-20 equivalent). Lighter and heavier variants work.
- Repeat unit
- 12 warp × 12 weft
- Twill zone
- 4×4 region, 2/2 progression
- Pearl node
- 2×2 region, plain weave
- Loom requirement
- Standard 2-axis. No special tooling.
- License
- CERN-OHL-W 2.0
How to start
If you run a textile workshop or have access to one, you can produce a SOLARIS sample in a single weaving day. Use any yarn you can source locally, the architecture is fiber-independent. Begin with a small swatch (40 × 40 cm) before scaling to bolt sizes.
Document what you do. Publish your results. The pattern grows with every replication.
What we ask in return
Nothing. SOLARIS is genuinely open. If you build something with it, tell us. We want to see what the world makes. If you improve it, share the improvement back. That's how an open architecture stays useful.
You may copy, modify, distribute, manufacture, and sell products based on this specification. Modifications must be shared under the same license. Use of the SOLARIS name in commercial products should reference this specification.
What's separately held: Advanced optimization variants and the high-performance HOST composite process are separately patented and commercially licensed at blacksun.company.
